NEW YORK — Ken Griffey Jr. sat at the front of the room with Major League Baseball Players Association Executive Director Tony Clark to his left and Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred to his right.
They were on hand at Citi Field Thursday afternoon, along with Andrew McCutchen, Curtis Granderson and former All-Stars Marquis Grissom and John Franco to announce a joint effort to continue growing baseball and softball with Griffey Jr. serving as youth ambassador. The MLBPA and MLB are donating nearly $2 million for youth-focused initiatives, but with Clark and Manfred in the same place at the same time and the current collective bargaining agreement expiring on Dec. 1, Griffey Jr. couldn’t hold back.
“I know these two over here are in the middle of a labor agreement and I’m sitting in the middle and it’s a little warm in here,” Griffey Jr. said at the dais. “But, hopefully we can not have to worry about that and continue to play this lovely game.”
