The Penguins' golden anniversary now has the sweetest of golden mementos.
Sidney Crosby was formally recognized Sunday afternoon at PPG Paints Arena for achieving 1,000 points three nights earlier, and it was done in style, befitting a franchise that's long carried itself in a first-class way.
"It was great," Crosby told DKPittsburghSports.com after the Penguins' 5-2 loss to the Red Wings. "Just so nice. I feel really grateful to have people like this here."
Before faceoff, in a private ceremony in the home locker room, Evgeni Malkin presented to Crosby a gold-plated hockey stick, accompanied by a stick holder molded from the steel of the Civic Arena's roof. Malkin was flanked by the captain's other longest-tenured teammates: Chris Kunitz, Kris Letang and Marc-Andre Fleury.
