The passing of Daniel M. Rooney, the Steelers' legendary patriarch, moved the Penguins and their fans to create an unforgettable few sights and sounds Friday night at PPG Paints Arena.
Before the national anthem for Game 2 of the Stanley Cup playoffs, public address announcer Ryan Mill asked the crowd for a moment of silence, no small request in the context of a highly-charged atmosphere for the event at hand. But it switched immediately to instant and total silence for the several seconds before Mill's 'We thank you.'
"Not one peep," Dana Heinze, the Penguins' equipment manager, would observe after the game. "It was beautiful. Just perfect. What a display of respect from Pittsburgh fans."
