Rust, Simon leave game with injuries, severities unknown

PHILADELPHIA -- Bryan Rust and Dominik Simon were both hurt Wednesday night in the Penguins' 5-2 victory over the Flyers at Wells Fargo Center, Rust's injury coming to the upper body, Simon's to the lower body.

Mike Sullivan's description after the game didn't delve beyond that.

"Rusty is continuing to be evaluated right now. We'll probably know more tomorrow," Sullivan said. "Dominik's being evaluated."

Rust was injured 8:28 into the first period on a big -- and illegal -- check from Philadelphia's rookie defenseman, Robert Hagg. Rust was skating behind the Flyers' net when Hagg came high and drove Rust -- right shoulder first -- into the glass. Rust appeared to see that the hit was coming and turned so he wasn't hit from behind:

He stayed down on the ice for a few moments before skating off on his own power and heading back to the dressing room.

Hagg was issued a two-minute minor for boarding, though it probably should have been called charging given the distance he covered to deliver the check. He has 32 penalty minutes and no prior fines or suspensions.

Rust missed 11 games earlier this season after sustaining an upper-body injury Dec. 29 at Carolina.

Simon was injured at some point in the second period, though it wasn't immediately clear when or how. He didn't return for the third.

Though they were down to 10 forwards and a shortened bench, it didn't seem to have much effect on the Penguins, who won their third straight and moved into first place in the Metropolitan Division.

"We handled it well," said Sidney Crosby, who had three assists, his first multi-point night in nine games. "I think our urgency and desperation went up."
