RICHMOND, Va. — I’ve been thinking about “The Streak” a bit lately, with the Penguins on the precipice of another chance at a three-peat, 25 years later.
It’s an amazing achievement, that 17-game tear down the stretch of the 1992-93 regular season, but did it cost the team that third Stanley Cup?
Everybody has an opinion, and it’s impossible to know for sure. I can’t help but suspect it did to some extent. It’s difficult to watch highlights from that amazing run, and this game in particular, without feeling a twinge of regret. Without muttering under your breath, “What a colossal waste.” Still, it is an amazing achievement, and one that I get a little defensive of each time some other team begins to creep near it. And it’s pretty cool that, for all the accomplishments that this franchise has piled up, many of which mean SO much more, that they own this one as well. So, I’ll take it.
Now, let’s go get that three-peat!
