RICHMOND, Va. — A few days before Christmas 2016, as the Blue Jackets were drubbing the Penguins 7-1 in the midst of their 16-game winning streak, I made some crack on social media about how that victory would be the centerpiece of Columbus’ year-end highlight video, once they’d been beaten by Pittsburgh in the playoffs.
Flash forward four months. With the teams preparing to face off in the first round, I feared my mocking words might come back to haunt me. Alas, I needn’t have worried. Imagine my relief and satisfaction a year ago today, with the Penguins having all but advanced, all while writing the first chapter of the legend of playoff wizard Jake Guentzel and continuing their utter domination of Sergei Bobrovsky.
Having learned nothing, of course, I immediately made a bunch of jokes about it on social media!
