Cartoon Canon: Harvey’s masterpiece!

RICHMOND, Va. — The tale of Harvey Haddix and the greatest game ever pitched has been told many times, seldom better than by our own Jerry Wolper a few weeks back in Buried Treasure.

But one of my favorite retellings came courtesy of the band The Baseball Project, a supergroup composed of members of R.E.M., the Minus 5, and The Dream Syndicate, on their 2008 debut record Volume 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails.

Available on all the usual streaming suspects, the band covers not only Haddix’s perfect game that wasn’t, but also Ted Williams‘ confidence, Curt Flood’s sacrifice, Pascual Perez getting lost on his way to the ballpark, and a few dozen other topics. It’s a wonderful and accessible marriage of music and sports created by folks who obviously, truly love the game of baseball, and it’s well worth seeking out for a listen!
