LOS ANGELES -- Here comes another unwelcome vacancy to the regular rotation.
The Pirates placed Joe Musgrove on the 10-day disabled list because of an infected right index finger, announcing the move minutes before their Tuesday night game against the Dodgers. It's retroactive to June 30, which means he'll basically miss one start, the one he was expected to take in the series finale Wednesday at 8:10 p.m. Eastern.
That starter had been officially listed as TBA until after the Pirates' 8-3 loss, but Clint Hurdle acknowledged the expected in announcing it'll be Clay Holmes. A 25-year-old right-hander, Holmes has been with the team since a June 24 recall but has logged only two innings of relief despite being a starter in the minors. With Class AAA Indianapolis, he made 13 appearances, 12 of them starts, and was 6-3 with a 3.39 ERA. In June alone, he'd allowed two earned runs over 25 1/3 innings.
He's a groundball specialist, which could come in handy against a Los Angeles lineup that's slugged 10 home runs in the first two games of this series, and I asked him about that:
