Pirates

Cartoon Canon: Ott’s (real-life) slam!

RICHMOND, Va. -- Finding strip-worthy events in the dog days of summer can be a tall order. As tempting as it’d be to celebrate some year in which the Steelers went undefeated in the preseason (Has that ever happened? I couldn’t be bothered to look it up), ugh, what’s the point?

That said, there’s nothing like a baseball brawl to get the juices flowing, and the beatdown that Ed Ott put on Felix Millan, in the first game of a doubleheader (which the Pirates would sweep), back in 1977 at Three Rivers Stadium, truly fits the bill. Though I must admit, I felt a little guilty when, upon further inspection, I realized that Ott’s maneuver destroyed Millan’s shoulder and effectively ended his MLB career!
