Nearly one month ago, the Pirates were among the biggest buyers, if not the biggest buyer, at MLB's non-waiver trade deadline.
They acquired pitchers Chris Archer and Keone Kela in what they hoped would give their playoff hopes a much-needed boost.
Well, that hasn't quite panned out.
Archer is just 1-2 with a 6.45 ERA and hasn't pitched into the sixth inning in any of his five starts. Meanwhile, the Pirates have gone just 8-15 this month and have all but fallen out of contention. They enter Tuesday's game at St. Louis 13 1/2 games out of first in the NL Central and 8 1/2 out of a wildcard spot.
Accordingly, the Pirates appear to be taking a much different approach to the Aug. 31 waiver trade deadline. They are sellers.
Per MLB Network's Jon Heyman, the Pirates dangled Josh Harrison but the veteran infielder cleared revocable waivers on Tuesday.
