Andrew McCutchen is on his way to the Bronx, according to multiple reports saying the former NL MVP with the Pirates has been traded from the Giants to the Yankees, ending his tenure in San Francisco short of a full season.
The move was first reported on Twitter by ESPN's Buster Olney. Shortly after Olney's report, New York Post columnist Joel Sherman began to fill in the details.
McCutchen, 31, has batted .255 with 15 home runs and 55 RBIs in 130 games while primarily playing right field for the Giants. Those numbers are a significant downturn from his production with the Pirates, as he hit .279 with 28 home runs just last season before being traded.
In New York, McCutchen will be reunited with longtime Pittsburgh teammate Neil Walker, where both will have a chance to win a first World Series championship.
The Yankees are making the move with slugger Aaron Judge taking longer than expected to return from a broken wrist. Judge has yet to begin swinging a bat, and the Yankees, while in comfortable position in the wild-card race, have drifted eight games back of the Red Sox in the AL East.
Abital Avelino, who the Giants stand to get in return, is a 23-year-old Dominican shortstop who was promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after batting .337 with 10 home runs in 49 Double-A games. Since being promoted, he has hit .252 with just five homers.
