Pirates’ makeup game vs. Marlins canceled

CHICAGO — The Pirates' season won't stretch into October after all. With both teams eliminated from the postseason, their makeup game against the Marlins on Oct. 1 has been canceled.

The game, which was originally scheduled to be played Sept. 9, had not been given a start time and tickets weren't being sold. The Pirates' loss to the Brewers on Sunday officially eliminated them from the playoffs, stripping this one final makeup game of any possible postseason implications. As a result, their season will end Sunday in Cincinnati at Great American Ballpark.

This is the second time in three years the Pirates won't complete 162 regular-season games. Their last home game in 2016 ended in a 1-1 tie against the Cubs because of inclement weather.

Fans still holding tickets from the Sept. 9 game can exchange them for any April or May home game in 2019, excluding the home opener on April 1 against the Cardinals.
