RICHMOND, Va. -- I wrote last week about the Pirates’ crazy victory in the 1925 World Series.
Their next championship, 35 long years later, was every bit as extraordinary and is slightly more familiar to most fans.
The powerhouse Yankees were dominant throughout the 1960 Series, winning three games by scores of 16-3, 10-0 and 12-0. Indeed, they outscored the Pirates, 55-27, over the full seven games. Still, the Pirates always seemed to be able to get a hit or an out when it counted most to scratch out four close victories, and none were more dramatic than the greatest home run in baseball history!
