RICHMOND, Va. -- There’s almost nothing you can say about the Immaculate Reception that hasn’t already been said. It’s one of those rare examples of the definitive point where a franchise turned around its fortunes for good, like Dwight Clark’s touchdown catch for the 49ers in the 1981 NFC Championship game, or when the Patriots introduced the world to the Tuck Rule.
All situations where, after that one play, nothing was ever the same again.
I want to give a special thanks to whomever had the idea to place the statue of Franco Harris making his famous shoestring grab at the Pittsburgh International Airport. It can be challenging to provide a new look at something we’ve all seen a million times, but thanks to all the photos I’ve snapped of the thing over the years, I had some really nice reference material to create an image of the Reception from an angle we haven’t seen before.
Of course, with something like a comic strip you can make your best attempt and claim “artistic license”…but a play so iconic demands a certain level of verisimilitude, don’t you think?
