RICHMOND, Va. -- Continuing the late-1970s theme from last week, it’s the Steelers’ reward for trouncing Houston in the ice and slop of the ’78 AFC Championship Game … a date with Dallas in Super Bowl XIII.
If you grew up in the 70s, there were two choices: Steelers or Cowboys. Everybody was a fan of one and despised the other. The two seemed to dominate every aspect of NFL consciousness in the latter half of the decade, with their massive popularity reflected in even the smallest ways. For instance, the fact that in northeast Ohio you could always find merchandise for exactly three teams, the hometown Browns, of course, but also the Steelers and the Cowboys.
That being the case, Super Bowl XIII was a monumental event, a heavyweight fight between the two best and most prominent teams. And despite the impossible hype, boy, did it deliver! Still regarded among the best of all time, it was the first Super Bowl I watched... and I spent most of the next 15 years waiting to watch for another one as good!
