RICHMOND, Va. -- The Penguins have had longer winning streaks, but they’ve never had a better month than they did back in March of 2013, going a perfect 15-0. Along the way, they added Brenden Morrow, Douglas Murray and Jarome Iginla to the roster, and seemed primed for a Stanley Cup run.
Of course, none of that worked out, and this very game may have been a harbinger of things to come, with Sidney Crosby taking a deflected puck to the mouth, resulting in the captain spending a month on the shelf and adding fuel to the theory that the Winter Classic throwback uniforms were hopelessly, incurably cursed.
And, because I can never seem to write one of these introductions without talking about how it affected me, I’ll share an unfortunate bit of symmetry. While I witnessed in person exactly none of the games during the streak, I did get to see both the game before the streak began, a listless 4-1 loss at Carolina, and the streak-breaker, and odd home loss to Buffalo by the exact same score.
Of all the rotten luck, eh?
