Well, we'll all be cow-kicked.
Mike Lange, the longtime radio voice of the Penguins, will miss the start of the Stanley Cup playoffs as he recovers from a recent illness. The 71-year-old was briefly hospitalized last week and is now resting at home after suffering an adverse reaction to medication for pneumonia.
“They’ve encouraged me to rest, but I’m looking forward to getting back in the booth with the ‘Ol-29er’ Phil Bourque as soon as possible,” Lange said in a statement.
Lange's iconic, gravelly voice will still be heard during tomorrow night's Game 1 against the Islanders. He will phone in during the first intermission to speak with intermission host Brian Metzer.
In Lange's absence, Josh Getzoff will handle radio play-by-play duties at the start of the playoffs with Bourque providing analysis. Lange, who is in his 44th season as a Penguins broadcaster, has reduced the number of road games he calls in recent seasons. Getzoff, now in his third season with the Penguins, has been on the call for most of the road games.
Paul Steigerwald will host the pre- and post-game radio shows on the Penguins Radio Network.
