MLB Draft: Pirates load up on college players

The Pirates chose college players with all eight selections Tuesday during the second day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

The Pirates picked six pitchers and two hitters. Here is a look at Tuesday's selections:

Matt Fraizer, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound left-handed hitting center fielder from the University of Arizona, in the third round.

He batted .412/.452/.565 with one home run and five stolen bases in 19 games this season.

J.C. Flowers, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-handed reliever from Florida State, in the fourth round.

He is 0-0 with 11 saves and 1.52 ERA in 20 games along with a 1.10 WHIP, and 22 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings. Florida State plays LSU in an NCAA Tournament super regional this week.

Grant Ford, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed reliever from the University of Nevada, in the fifth round.

He had a 5-1 record with five saves and a 2.76 ERA in 28 games, along with a 0.99 WHIP and 51 strikeouts over 45 2/3 innings.

Will Matthiesen, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound right-hander from Stanford, in the sixth round.

He is 6-2 with one save and a 3.71 ERA in 15 games (eight starts) along with a 1.22 WHIP and 55 strikeouts in 53 1/3 innings. Stanford plays Mississippi State in a super regional.

Blake Sabol, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound left-handed hitting catcher/right fielder from the University of Southern California, in the seventh round.

He hit .268/.346/.368 with three home runs, 22 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in 55 games.

Austin Roberts, a 6-foot, 219-pound right-hander from Sacramento State in the eighth round.

He was 5-4 with six saves and a 3.18 ERA in 22 games (nine starts) along with a 1.28 WHIP and 84 strikeouts in 73 1/3 innings.

Paul Ethan, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound left-handed hitting shortstop from Vanderbilt, in the ninth round.

He is batting .325/.392/.524 with nine home runs and eight stolen bases in 62 games. Vanderbilt plays Duke in a super regional.

• Cameron Junker, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound right-handed pitcher from Notre Dame in the 10th round.

He was 3-5 with a 4.19 ERA in 15 starts along with a 1.38 WHIP and 73 strikeouts in 77 1/3 innings.

Scouts have been saying all spring that this year's draft class is weak. Looking at the statistics of some of the players the Pirates drafted on the second day, it seems the scouts are right.
