HOUSTON – Jameson Taillon is scheduled to take a step forward in his recovery from a strained right elbow flexor tendon this weekend.
The Pirates’ opening-day starter will play catch this weekend during the Pirates’ three-game series against the Brewers in Milwaukee. Taillon has been on the injured list since May 2.
Taillon is 2-3 with a 4.10 ERA in seven starts this season.
In other injury news:
• Bryan Reynolds (bruised right calf) is available to be used off the bench for Wednesday night’s game against the Astros at Minute Maid Park after sitting out the series opener on Tuesday night. It was originally reported by the Pirates than Reynolds had a shin injury, but it is his calf that is bruised.
• Francisco Cervelli (concussion) has not been cleared to participate in baseball activities and is undergoing more testing. The Pirates had been hopeful he could start a rehab assignment this upcoming weekend.
• Gregory Polanco (left shoulder inflammation) took batting practice before Wednesday night’s game and could go a rehab assignment next week.
• Keone Kela (right shoulder inflammation) is playing catch up to 105 feet. Kela had been working out at the Pirates’ training facility in Bradenton, Fla., but rejoined the team this week and the reliever told me he is “feeling much better.”
• Rookie Davis (right middle finger blister) is over the blister program but developed right forearm tightness last week during his rehab assignment with Class AAA Indianapolis. He is now in Bradenton and will start a throwing program next week.
• Lonnie Chisenhall (left calf strain) received a second opinion from an orthopedist he has worked with in the past, but Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk had no further information.
• Jordan Lyles (left hamstring tightness) continues to be on course to be activated from the IL on Saturday night to start against the Brewers.
• Erik Gonzalez (left clavicle fracture) continues to progress toward a rehab assignment.
