RICHMOND, Va. -- It’s been a brilliant season for the Pirates' first basemen, with All-Star Josh Bell’s powerful prowess at the plate conjuring up memories of one of the most beloved Bucs of all, Willie Stargell.
And yet, for some reason, I’ve chosen to revisit arguably the dopiest dude ever to play the position in Pittsburgh: The sausage smacker himself, Randall Simon.
I remember what a disappointment and embarrassment it was, seeing the team mired in yet another forgettable, lost season finally make national headlines… and for such an idiotic reason.
Message boards were all the rage in those days, and as a result, it was possible for almost anyone to share an opinion on the incident… and boy, did they. It’d be interesting to see what the reaction would be in our current day and age of social media saturation. On second thought, no, it wouldn’t. Let’s just forget I brought it up!
