The Steelers signed wide receiver Johnny Holton to their practice squad on Monday morning after allowing him to gauge interest from other teams around the league.
Holton, 28, was with the team throughout the offseason and training camp, catching seven passes for 167 yards and one touchdown in the preseason.
But he was among the players released by the team on Saturday as it trimmed its roster from 90 to 53 players. The former University of Cincinnati star also has played for the Raiders and Eagles.
The Steelers added 10 players to their practice squad Sunday but had one spot remaining because they have an exemption for tight end Christian Scotland-Williamson, who is an international player.
Meanwhile, the Steelers remain interested in finding a veteran tight end to help their depth at the position behind Vance McDonald.
A number of veteran tight ends were released around the league over the weekend, including Luke Willson by the Raiders and Ben Koyack by the Jaguars.
Willson would be interesting because he also backed up McDonald when the two were together at Rice University. Steelers placekicker Chris Boswell also was on that team.
Koyack, meanwhile, is a native of Oil City, Pa., and played collegiately at Notre Dame.
The Steelers return to practice Monday to begin preparations for their regular-season opener Sunday night at New England.
