RICHMOND, Va. -- Rennie Stennett, while ostensibly a member of the Pirates’ famed 1970s Lumber Company, was always more likely to turn in an amazing play with the glove than he was with the bat. Which makes it all the more ironic that he owns one of the most impressive offensive stats not just in the history of his own super-slugging team, but his entire sport!
Stennett’s 7 for 7 performance in September 1975 (four singles, two doubles, and a triple in his seventh at-bat) is so unlikely it’s a wonder it isn’t talked about more, especially when you consider that it also occurred in the single-most severe shellacking in over a century of Major League ballgames.
The fact that it came at the expense of the Cubs — in Wrigley Field, no less — just makes it that much sweeter.
