Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger wasn't with the team in San Francisco for its 24-20 loss Sunday to the 49ers.
But there was a good reason. He was in Los Angeles.
Roethlisberger had surgery in Los Angeles Monday morning, according to team spokesman Burt Lauten, and is currently recovering from the successful procedure.
"Ben Roethlisberger had successful surgery on his right elbow on Monday in Los Angeles at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic. Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed the procedure in consultation with Steelers Team Physician Jim Bradley, who began his career at the Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic," Lauten said in a statement.
"Once Ben returns to Pittsburgh, he immediately will begin working with the Steelers’ medical staff on his rehabilitation, and he is expected to make a full recovery and return to the field for the 2020 NFL season."
Roethlisberger, 37, suffered an elbow injury in the Steelers' Sept. 15 loss at Heinz Field to the Seahawks, leaving the game at the end of the first half. He was placed on season-ending injured reserve.
With Roethlisberger out, second-year quarterback Mason Rudolph made his first career start against the 49ers, throwing for 174 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the loss that dropped the Steelers to 0-3.
The Steelers return to action next Monday night when they host the Bengals at Heinz Field.
Roethlisberger, who is signed through the 2021 season, said he fully intends to return from this injury and be ready for the start of the 2020 season.
