Cam Heyward struggles to his feet after suffering a quad injury early against the Bengals at Heinz Field. – MATT SUNDAY / DKPS

Cam Heyward left the game in the first quarter of the Steelers' 27-3 win over the Bengals Monday night with a thigh injury.

But he was OK:

See?

That's Heyward powering through a block and chucking Andy Dalton to the grass in the third quarter of the Steelers' romp, a common sight on this 73-degree evening at Heinz Field. The Steelers defense recorded eight sacks in all, ripping through the Bengals' porous line with ease time and again to register 12 hits total on Dalton.

Heyward himself ended with 2.5 sacks on the day, and even though he returned in the first quarter after that injury, it wasn't exactly smooth sailing for No. 97.

"I was going through it early," Heyward was saying after the game at his locker. "That's a lot of pain to go through in my thigh, but I wanted to make sure I was coming back out."

Mike Tomlin, in classic Coach Tomlin fashion, didn't add too much to Heyward's status or to the nature of his injury during his post-game press conference.

"Cam Heyward hurt his quad. He was able to go back in the game," Tomlin said.

That ... pretty much sums it up. Heyward was hurt. But by all current indications, it does not appear he was injured, and there is a major difference there.

Elsewhere, James Conner got up slowly in the third quarter, showing a bit of a limp on his way to the sideline.

"James Conner hurt his left ankle. He was able to go back in the game," Tomlin said. "So [we're] optimistic about those guys.

"The other guys that missed some time, maybe we'll get a couple guys back. This week, we'll let participation be our guide."

Among those "other guys" Tomlin mentioned who did not suit up against the Bengals are:

  • Roosevelt Nix (knee)
  • Anthony Chickillo (foot)
  • Vince Williams (hamstring)
  • Vance McDonald (shoulder)

We'll continue to monitor their status throughout the week as the Steelers gear up for another AFC North showdown, this time Sunday at 1 p.m. against the Ravens right back here at Heinz Field.
