RICHMOND, Va. -- It was a short spring and a long summer, but finally, tonight, hockey is back, and I couldn’t be more excited about it!
To get into the spirit, let’s look back to opening night almost 30 years ago: There was a new coach in town and, though we didn’t know it yet, he had the Penguins on the edge of immortality.
One of my favorite parts of this gig is the research. I always love finding out about sneaky, obscure records. This one held by Kevin Stevens definitely fits that bill. Also fun is looking through old issues of Pittsburgh’s newspapers for the original game stories about the events I reference in my strips, via the Google Newspaper Archives. The copy of The Pittsburgh Press from Oct. 6, 1990, which I used for this comic, was particularly entertaining, with a Penguins/Capitals recap by our own Dave Molinari, multiple pages on the Pirates and Reds in the NLCS, and even a Bubby Brister mention or two. It was a veritable time capsule!
