Steelers linebacker Anthony Chickillo -- MATT SUNDAY / DKPS

A day after charges were dropped against him in Fayette County for his involvement in a domestic violence incident earlier this month, Steelers linebacker Anthony Chickillo was given clearance by the NFL to return to the team.

Chickillo, 26, was removed from the Commissioner's Exempt List by the NFL and activated by the Steelers Thursday morning. Linebacker Jayrone Elliott, who was signed last week when Chickillo was placed on the exempt list, was released.

Chickillo's status was in question after he was arrested Oct. 20 by state police on accusations that he assaulted his girlfriend, Alysha Newman, at Nemacolin Woodlands in Wharton Township. The two are no longer together.

Chickillo was drafted by the Steelers in the sixth round in 2015 and signed a two-year contract in the offseason to stay with the team. He has appeared in three games this season, recording three tackles and half a sack.

Chickillo is expected to be ready to play when the Steelers (3-4) return to action Sunday when they host the Colts (5-2) at Heinz Field.
