Penguins

Cartoon Canon: Snow globe goal!

RICHMOND, Va. -- I was surprised last week that this game didn’t seem to be on any decade-ending best-of lists … then doubly surprised when I recalled that the game had occurred a dozen years ago, a highlight of the Penguins’ previous decade!

Opinions vary on the state of the Winter Classic at this point. You could make the case that the idea is played out, and that the very concept of the game usually results in sloppy hockey. But none of that can cheapen the wonderful, perfect experience of watching the Penguins and the Sabres skate in the snow that first time, a rare example in our oversaturated sports environment of witnessing something you’d never seen before.
