As the Pirates continue to evaluate potential outfield options, it appears they will be getting a boost internally as well.
Outfielder Jason Martin has finished rehabbing his left shoulder, according to a tweet Tuesday by his physical therapist, Stan Conte. Pirates spring training starts next week, and Conte says Martin is ready to compete.
Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Martin's rehab from shoulder surgery was going "extremely well" during a conference call in December, but he was unsure at that time if Martin would be ready for the start of spring training.
Martin, 24, injured his left shoulder during a collision at the plate on Sept. 3, ending his season. While the medical staff was initially optimistic he could rehab the injury without surgery, he eventually went under the knife on Oct. 18.
Martin bats left-handed, but throws with his right hand.
The Pirates are currently looking for outfielders after trading Starling Marte to the Diamondbacks last week, and Martin is one of four true outfielders on the 40-man roster. The others are Bryan Reynolds, Gregory Polanco and Guillermo Heredia. The Pirates will also have several non-roster invitees competing for a spot on the team this spring, including Socrates Brito and Charles Tilson.
Martin is rated as the Pirates' 18th best prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He spent most of last season in triple-A Indianapolis, where he slashed .259/.312/.419 with eight home runs and 50 RBIs over 406 plate appearances.
