BRADENTON, Fla. -- Good morning!
Sometimes real life really does rise above the site.
My daughter Dara received some wonderful news, that she'd been accepted by a college she loves, and things got pretty emotional around here. For full context: She hadn't been satisfied with the slate of schools available to her straight out of high school, so she chose to sit out a year, study independently and become better at everything. And after another tour of a lot of the same schools, this thumbs-up came yesterday afternoon.
We weren't all in agreement with her sitting out a year. But we were wrong, and she was right. She believed in herself, bet on herself and won big.
By comparison, with all due apologies, the NHL trade deadline was a non-thing in our house. So I'm taking the rare exception and passing on writing about it. The brain just isn't there. Besides, it's not like we don't have a Hall of Famer in the house to handle such fare at an elite level.
Thanks for understanding.
On that note, yeah, I've flown back here to Florida to start my second of three tours of duty at the Pirates' spring training, allowing Alex Stumpf to fly home for a brief breather. He'll be back on the beat by the weekend. The timing worked out well with the Penguins being way out west with their annual California trip. Dave Molinari's got that, and so I had a chance to get back down for more baseball.
• The Penguins return to practice today, 4 p.m. Eastern, in Los Angeles. Dave will be there. The next game is tomorrow, 10:38 p.m., against the Kings. All our hockey coverage can be found on our team page.
• Dale Lolley's out in Indianapolis all week for the NFL Scouting Combine, and that'll include access today to Kevin Colbert. All our football coverage can be found on our team page.
• The Pirates will face the Phillies today, 1:05 p.m., at LECOM Park. I've got this one. All our baseball coverage can be found on our team page.
• Pitt will face Syracuse tomorrow, 7:01 p.m., at the Petersen Events Center. Hunter Homistek will have that. All our basketball coverage can be found on our team page.
• Our friends at Moon Golf Club are backing a drive to 1,500 military subscriptions. and we sold, um ... 15 yesterday! For real! Two bulk purchases, including one of 10 by Lifetime Lunatic Matt Polka and another five from Rhonda Weiland. That raised our year's total to 91. That's pretty encouraging considering we just started three weeks ago.
