Site Stuff: This app’s for everyone

The new app continues to make progress, continues to get us excited. I've actually got a pre-pre-test copy in my iPhone as of this week, so it's felt that much more real.

Can't wait till everyone has it. And by everyone, I mean everyone.

One super-important concept to this app is that, like the current one, it'll be free and available to everyone. Which is precisely how we plan to promote it. Because we want people to use it, to like it and, ultimately, to subscribe for our premium content.

Our premium content, for those who don't know:

• My Grind columns
• All analysis pieces
• All weekly features
• Live Qs at 5
• Commenting community

Yeah, that's a lot. But there's also still a lot that's left over, notably our news coverage. And for people who might be more casual fans of our sports teams, maybe that's just enough to start. But maybe, again, if they like what they see, they'll want more than the straight news, stats and multimedia that are open to everyone.

Consider it more of a passive wall than a pay wall, if you will.

This has been the case here already for months. It's just that we'll be a lot more vocal about it when the new app launches because ... you know, it'll actually be worth the shout. Also, for the first time, we'll label that level DKPS+.

Can't stress this enough: For existing subscribers, nothing changes. Zero. If you're in, you're in. Hundred percent access.

Any questions about this, I'll be eager and excited to answer them below.

MILITARY DRIVE TO 1,500: 251

What a week it was for the Military Drive. I mean, wow.

For those new to this, Josh DeNinno, our great friend at Moon Golf Club, is challenging our subscribers to step up with 1,500 veteran subscription purchases in 2020, commemorating his course's 15th anniversary. And in the three weeks since he's done so, our count is already at 251, including 14 bulk purchases.

Two of those bulk purchases this week, stunningly, came at 50 each! Another of 25!

That said, all purchases, bulk and single, are respected and appreciated, and we've obviously got a very long way to go. But it's a great start, and there's been a great reaction to our having reduced the cost of these to half-price, now $19.99 for an annual, as we've done with other gift subscriptions. On top of that, Moon Golf Club will match 30 each month, beginning with this one.

Let's do this. Here's where.

Or, if you’re interested in making a bulk purchase, please email me directly: DK@DKPittsburghSports.com

And if you know of someone in the military who might want one of these, refer them here.

GOOD/BAD MONTHS?

I often write (complain) about how awful January and February are for this business, as they are for most businesses. It's the dreaded dead zone between Christmas and the first tax refunds, and no one spends. Our subscription revenue is no exception.

This year, though ... well, it's still awful, but it's less awful. In fact, this is two years in a row now we've had a better January/February stretch for subscription revenue than the previous year -- a 15 percent increase this time, to be specific -- and that's despite not having a price increase in forever. Means it's just more people coming aboard or staying.

At the start of a given year, that's always a good feeling.
