Noelia Marte, the wife of former Pirates player Starling Marte, has died.
Starling shared the news through social media Monday, saying Noelia had a heart attack.
"Today I go through the great pain of making public the unfortunate death of my wife Noelia, due to a heart attack. It is a moment of indescribable pain. On behalf of my family, I am grateful for the expressions of esteem and solidarity in this difficult time," Marte said on his Instagram.
Noelia had recently broke her ankle and was in the hospital, said Jon Heyman. She was awaiting surgery when she passed.
She and Starling had two children: A son, Starling Jr., who was born in 2013, and a daughter, Tiana. Tiana turned four on Saturday.
Marte had spent his entire baseball career with the Pirates organization before being traded to the Diamondbacks for prospects Brennan Malone and Liover Peguero and international bonus pool money in January.
