Penguins co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle have donated $100,000 each to a pair of local health systems that are dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.
Their contributions will be split evenly between Highmark Health and UPMC.
The Highmark donation will be applied to a mobile testing unit that will allow medical professional to conduct COVID-19 testing, primarily for what a team release characterized as "underserved populations and communities." The release cited as the Hill District, Hazelwood, Clairton and Duquesne as examples.
The contribution to UPMC will go to its Children's Hospital Helpers Fund, which provides support for families and caregivers affected by the pandemic.
"We are so proud of how the Penguins players, coaches, staff and management have stepped forward to assist our community," Lemieux and Burkle said in a joint statement released by the team. "We hope that these donations can help Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities deal with this unprecedented crisis."
