Hey, you know how the saying goes.
After 18 rewarding, crazy, incredible, *insert adjective here* months, I'm moving on from DKPittsburghSports.com.
To all of you here who have ever commented or reached out or shook my hand at a game or shared a drink with me — like Scho up there in the picture — thank you. I cannot express how much that support meant (and means). The stories, the work, the long, long nights, the time away from friends and family and the endless miles on the road mean nothing without you, and I’m thankful for the relationships we’ve formed. You became not just subscribers but friends and, in some cases, adopted family. I love you all. Truly. (Even you, Soup.)
When I came here, I genuinely had no idea what I was getting myself into. And I mean that in the most literal sense. I simply loved the work on this site, and I wanted to be a part of it. I knew the skillset I possessed, so I pitched that to Dejan and Dali, and away we went.
I didn't realize I'd be holding an iPhone in Antonio Brown's face just weeks later, though. Or sharing a chuckle with Clint Hurdle in San Francisco later still. I almost forgot Pitt basketball existed until that offer presented itself (Sorry, yinz. I'm still and always a Mountaineer), so being captivated by Jeff Capel's philosophy and mentality never popped up in any of the 10,000 simulations I ran for my professional life.
I surely never expected to get paid to drink beer, either.
But that's what this site does. It provides opportunities and experiences. It's hard and it's occasionally frustrating, not going to lie there. What worth having isn't though? There's a reason only the best work here. It's because only the best can work here. I'm happy to have been a small part of that, and I guarantee you the best is yet to come. You've probably noticed some amazing things happening. It's no coincidence. I've seen behind the curtain, and, spoiler alert, it's going to work.
All this said, why the heck am I leaving right now?
I'm not the same professional I was when I showed up at Highmark Stadium in late November of 2018, nervously hoping DK and Dali would understand what I do and give me a chance. I've grown in countless ways, and those same experiences that made this the most fulfilling job I've ever had helped give clarity to where I want to go for the next phase of my career.
I am not done. I look forward to bringing you more from this city we love. It’s Pittsburgh, and there’s plenty beyond the sports. Beyond the food. Beyond the beer. Beyond the music. All of it. This is a special place, and I fully intend to capture the heart of it as I move forward.
We’re going to feast in this next chapter of my life. I hope to have you along for the ride.
