The sports world has been rocked the past week with news of players and facilities having positive coronavirus cases. Many NFL teams announced specific players, or a number of players, who tested positive at one point or another.
You can now count the Steelers among that group.
During a virtual press conference Tuesday, Mike Tomlin said two players tested positive for COVID-19 during the offseason. Tomlin went on to remind those in the press conference how those players who tested positive were not at the facility and followed proper protocol after testing positive.
This is the first positive test within the Steelers organization that was made public, and it likely won't be the last as facilities prepare to open to players in the month of July. As players are tested, naturally, more positive tests will come to light. However, the handling of these positive cases will be paramount. Quarantine and limiting any hospitalizations will be of the utmost importance as the NFL plans to get back on the field for training camp this summer.
Tomlin was asked about the possibility of football not happening in the fall, and he said he was hopeful it would take place. Tomlin was a part of a committee with the NFL to talk about the re-opening process and what it might look like.
The league will be setting official dates for teams to report to training camps in early July, and will have to make a decision on the length of the 2020 preseason at some point, too. There has been talk of cutting the preseason from four games to two, and that is something which would impact the Steelers as they are currently scheduled for five preseason games, including the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, against the Cowboys.
