The Steelers have one of the smallest coaching staffs in the NFL. While they didn't bring in any new coaches outside of Ike Hilliard, wide receivers coach, and Matt Canada, quarterbacks coach, Mike Tomlin did give two assistants new titles before the 2020 regular season.
Blaine Stewart, son of late West Virginia University coach Bill Stewart, has been promoted to assistant wide receivers coach. Stewart helped Ray Sherman with the receivers in 2019 after Darryl Drake passed away during training camp at Saint Vincent College. This change in title makes it official, and gives Hilliard a right-hand man heading into Hilliard's first camp with the team.
The other promotion was Denzel Martin, who will serve as assistant outside linebackers coach. Since the departure of Joey Porter as outside linebackers coach, the team gave those duties to defensive coordinator Keith Butler. Butler, still the team's defensive coordinator, will now have a new set of hands, and eyes, to facilitate him coaching the pass-rushers.
These titles are not going to change either coach's role much, if at all. As stated, Stewart worked with the receivers in 2019, and Martin worked with the defensive line and linebackers last season. While their titles might be different, the biggest difference might come with a nice bump in pay.
It doesn't increase the numbers of coaches on his staff, but Tomlin is doing what he can to help his coaches advance their careers.
