CAREY PRICE. -- MATT SUNDAY / DKPS

Montreal, the Penguins' qualifying-round opponent next month, was offensively challenged during the 2019-20 regular season, and that trend held during the Canadiens' first training-camp scrimmage.

Defenseman Ben Chiarot and winger Dale Weise scored the only goals as Team Red defeated Team White, 2-0, Saturday at the team's practice facility in suburban Brossard.

Carey Price, the Canadiens' No. 1 goalie, got the shutout.

"The scrimmage was good," center Nick Suzuki told reporters. "We only had two lines, obviously, so you're getting out there a lot. It was high-tempo. Everyone's really pushing and we really like to see that. As a line, you want to be in those game situations, just getting used to each other and just reading and reacting with each others."

Centers Phillip Danault and Ryan Poehling, defensemen Victor Mete and Cale Fleury and goalie Cayden Primeau did not participate in the scrimmage, but worked out on the ice before it.

Defensemen Brett Kulak and Xavier Ouellet did not practice again.

Montreal coach Claude Julien said he is pleased with what he's seen from his team through the first week of camp

"I've appreciated the focus and effort I've seen from the players," Julien said. "We've had some great practices this week. It's been four months where we haven't done anything, so for sure the guys are excited to be back playing. But the pace has been good all week. What I've really liked is how excited they are to be here.

"When the season was paused, our chances of making the playoffs were very thin, so to be able to take part in the postseason is something they're really excited about. At the end of the day, the players are excited to prove they can be in the playoffs for more than just one round, and that this is a good team."
