The Steelers on Monday placed defensive back Arrion Springs on the Reserve/COVID list.
Springs, who was in training camp with the Chiefs last year as an undrafted free agent, played with the Los Angeles Wildcats in the XFL earlier this year before signing with the Steelers in April.
A player being placed on the Reserve/COVID list does not necessarily mean that the player tested positive for coronavirus. The list is a new designation for NFL teams designed to allow them to keep players who either test positive or are quarantining after coming into close contact with someone who has tested positive away from the remainder of the roster while retaining their rights.
Teams are not permitted to disclose whether a player is on the list for testing positive or if they are just quarantining.
Steelers rookies and first-year players began reporting to the team over the past couple of days. Players must be tested twice and remain negative for coronavirus before they are permitted to enter team facilities.
Steelers veteran players can begin reporting Tuesday. The team, however, will not take the practice field for a padded practice until Aug. 17.
The Steelers are holding their entire training camp at Heinz Field this year in response to the pandemic. The NFL ruled that its teams cannot hold camps away from team facilities this season.
Last month, Mike Tomlin said the Steelers had two players test positive for coronavirus in the offseason, though those players were not identified.
