Second-year cornerback Justin Layne became the second Steelers player placed on the Reserve/COVID List Wednesday as the Steelers continued testing following their report to training camp at Heinz Field Tuesday.
Layne, a third-round draft pick in 2019, appeared in 10 games as a rookie, mostly on special teams, recording three tackles.
Layne joins first-year defensive back Arrion Springs on the Reserve/COVID List. Springs, who was signed in April after competing in the XFL, was placed on the list Monday.
The Reserve/COVID List is a new designation for the NFL this season. Players who test positive for coronavirus or who have been in close contact with someone who has done so must be placed on the list.
If a player falls into either of these categories, their club is required to immediately place the player on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Teams are not permitted to comment on player's medical status other than referring to roster status. Teams may not disclose whether player is in quarantine or is positive for COVID 19.
The Steelers reported to training camp Tuesday. According to Mike Tomlin, the team had two players test positive for coronavirus in the offseason.
