The Steelers on Friday activated wide receiver James Washington from the reserve/COVID list. To make room on their roster for the third-year receiver, the Steelers released linebacker John Houston.
Washington, who was placed on the reserve/COVID list August 2, was the team's leader in receiving yards in 2019. He caught 44 passes for 735 yards with three touchdowns last season.
A second-round draft pick in 2018, Washington is being counted on as one of the Steelers' top three receivers this season with Ben Roethlisberger returning from injury.
His return leaves running back Jaylen Samuels and cornerback Justin Layne still on the reserve/COVID list. Defensive back Arrion Springs had been on the list, but was released earlier in the week when he was cleared to return.
The reserve/COVID list was created by the NFL this year to help isolate players who either tested positive for the virus or were in close contact with someone who had tested positive. Players are permitted to be activated after they are symptom free and/or test negative for the virus, and are cleared by a team physician.
Steelers veterans began participating in on-field workouts earlier this week, but the team cannot have padded practices until Aug. 17.
