Pirates utilityman Phillip Evans was removed from Saturday's game against the Tigers on a stretcher after colliding with Gregory Polanco in right field.
After the game, Derek Shelton did not have an update on his status.
"He's still being evaluated. He's still at the hospital," Shelton said.
While Shelton said Evans was conscious when he saw him, he could not confirm that he lost consciousness before.
Evans, who was playing first base for the first time this season, and Polanco were both trying to track down a Miguel Cabrera pop fly in the top of the sixth and ran into each other. Evans took the worst of it, catching Polanco's elbow and forearm to his face before dropping to the dirt.
Second baseman Adam Frazier, who was also tracking the fly ball, was the one who called for the trainers shortly after the collision happened. They ran out to Evans, helping him to lie flat on his back and a cart was called shortly afterwards.
Shelton said Evans was responsive when the club's athletic staff tended to him and was able to answer questions about who they were and where he was. His legs were moving and he was able to lift his head slightly before being carted off the field.
Polanco remained in the game at right field. Shelton consoled him as Evans was being prepped to move.
Evans has been a regular this season for the Pirates, slashing .359/.444/.487 with one home run and nine RBIs over 45 plate appearances. He has played in 11 of the Pirates' first 15 games this season.
He was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored Saturday.
While he played briefly for the Mets in 2017 and 2018, this has been Evans' first real opportunity in the majors. He hit his first major-league home run Friday night.
