The Pirates will be coming out of their three-day unexpected layover without their opening day starter, placingĀ Joe Musgrove on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with right triceps inflammation.
Musgrove was scratched from his start Sunday with right ankle soreness, which had also been bothering him for a bit.
"We just thought with where we were at, just making sure that he was fine, that we were going to give him the 10 days," Shelton said Tuesday.
Musgrove was 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA so far this season.
The Pirates will make a corresponding move Wednesday before they leave to Cincinnati, where they will open a four-game series with the Reds starting Thursday.
Trevor Williams will make the start Thursday, and Shelton will announce the rest of the rotation Wednesday.
Because of the postponed Cardinals series and a scheduled off-day Monday, Shelton and pitching coach Oscar Marin can rework their rotation to make up for losing Musgrove.
"We can definitely reset it," Shelton said. "Certain guys can go in certain spots. Now with the fact of Joe coming out, Oscar and Mecc [bullpen coach Justin Meccage] and I will sit down and reset for not only that but we also have the off-day coming off the Cincinnati series. We can reset and work backwards from there."
Musgrove is the fourth starting pitcher the Pirates have on the injured list, joining Jameson Taillon (recovering from Tommy John surgery), Chris Archer (shoulder) and Mitch Keller (left oblique).
According to Spotrac, Musgrove will be the 13th different player the Pirates have on the IL. Only the Marlins -- who had a massive outbreak of COVID-19 -- have sent more players to the injured list this season.
