The Big 10 Conference yesterday postponed its 2020 football season until some non-specific stage of next spring. Maybe. And even then, Nebraska, which described its institution as 'very disappointed' in a statement,' promptly threatened to break off on its own to play ... someone ... somewhere.

The Pac-12 was next and postponed its 2020 football season until Jan. 1, 2021. 'If conditions improve,' the conference's statement declared. And even then, it promised only to 'consider' such a move.

Meanwhile, the ACC, SEC and Big 12 tiptoed through another day of pensive, semi-apologetic pledges to proceed with football as planned. Maybe. Some school presidents expressed a wish to dig deeper into the Big 10 and Pac-12 decisions. Some spoke of viewing the Big 12 as a swing vote. Some spoke of delaying the season a month, in hopes of ... magic?
