Former Pitt football administrator Alex Kramer has passed away at the age of 91.
The University of Pittsburgh announced the passing of Kramer on Wednesday. Kramer served as an administrative assistant for 17 years. While with the program Kramer was under five different coaches from Jackie Sherrill, Foge Fazio, Mike Gottfried, Paul Hackett and Johnny Majors.
During Kramer's tenure, Pitt football won four bowl games across ten winning seasons and three years the program finished 11-1. His duties were similar to what is recognized now as a director of football operations, where he oversaw team travel, weekly scheduling and day-to-day-operations.
Kramer was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving after his 1952 graduation from the University of Pittsburgh. He would return to Pitt and receive his masters degree in history in 1961. While he studied at Pitt, Kramer served as football student manager from 1948-1951. Even after his 1995 retirement, Kramer remained engaged with the program, even being part of the Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame selection committee since its inception in 2018.
"Alex Kramer is a true Pitt gem," Director of Athletics Heather Lyke said. "He proudly represented the University of Pittsburgh as an alumnus, administrator and, of course, as a lifelong Panthers fan. I'll be forever appreciative of his support and contributions as we launched the Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame. His knowledge of the University was surpassed only by his love for it. I was very blessed to get to know him the past three years. Our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones."
"Alex truly represented what it means to be a Pitt Man," head football coach Pat Narduzzi said. "He was incredibly passionate about his University. Alex loved the football program like family, and the many coaches and players he touched felt the same way about him. I'll never forget our dinners together at the annual Pitt Football Alumni Golf Outing, which he never missed. The Kramer family will be on our hearts and in our prayers."
