The Penguins have signed free-agent defenseman Josh Maniscalco to a three-year, entry-level contract.
Maniscalco, 21, is 6 foot 2, 200 pounds and had 11 goals and 21 assists in 36 games as a sophomore at Arizona State last season.
He is a right-handed shot and is believed to have planned to return to the Sun Devils for his junior season, but opted to turn pro because of uncertainty about whether there will be college hockey during the coming winter because of the coronavirus pandemic.
"Josh is a solid, puck-moving offensive defenseman," Jim Rutherford said, in a statement released by the team. "He jumps into the rush and plays a style that is complementary to our group. We think highly of his character and are happy to add Josh to the organization."
The possibility of the Penguins signing Maniscalco was discussed in a story on the site earlier this week.
Maniscalco hails from Perkiomenville, Pa. and played for the U.S. National Development Program and Dubuque in the USHL before going to Arizona State. He also played at Shattuck-St. Mary's prop school in Minnesota, as did Sidney Crosby, Teddy Blueger and Jack Johnson.
