The Pirates added some more depth to their injury filled bullpen on Monday afternoon, claiming RHP Carson Fulmer off waivers from the Tigers.
The 26-year-old Fulmer appeared in seven games with the Tigers this season, throwing 6.2 innings, allowing eight hits, five earned runs, three walks and striking out seven. He was designated for assignment on Aug. 20.
To make room on the 40-man roster, outfielder Guillermo Heredia has been designated for assignment.
Fulmer was selected with the eighth overall pick in the first round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft by the White Sox. In college he was a part of a loaded Vanderbilt team that included numerous notable big league players such as Dodgers' pitcher Walker Buehler, Braves' shortstop Dansby Swanson and Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds.
Fulmer made his debut in the big leagues in 2016, just one year after being drafted by Chicago. He pitched in parts of four seasons with the White Sox (2016-19) before being claimed by the Tigers last month (July 25).
Fulmer has made 51 career appearances (15 starts) in the big leagues, including a career-high 20 with the White Sox in 2019. His has a career ERA of 6.57.
The Pirates' new righty has four pitches: a fastball, cutter, curve and change. Fulmer relies on his fastball as a primary pitch, throwing it over 50% of the time throughout his major league career, coming across the plate at an average speed of 92.3 mph this season.
During his short time in Detroit, Fulmer significantly reduced the use of his cutter, and instead put his changeup and curve ball to use more often.
