Earlier on Tuesday, head coach Pat Narduzzi said that he felt his program was close to announcing an opponent for Pitt football's 2020 season opener, after Miami Ohio's season was cancelled earlier in August by the Mid-American Conference.
Not long after, Pitt football announced its opponent would be Austin Peay on September 12th at Heinz Field:
This will be the first time Pitt and Austin Peay have played in football, with Austin Peay coming from the Football Championship Subdivision, and the Ohio Valley Conference. Austin Peay finished 11-4 in 2019 and won two playoff games in the FCS playoffs before losing to Montana State in the quarterfinals.
This gives Pitt a full eleven game schedule with the non-conference game preceding their ten consecutive games in the ACC.
At this time, Pitt is still working with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Heinz Field to communicate with Governor Tom Wolf's office about whether fans can attend home games this season. Game times and television agreements are to be announced at a later date.
