A new YouTube series documenting Ben Roethlisberger debuted Wednesday, spanning the quarterback's tumultuous 2019, his elbow injury early in that season and then his recovery to get back onto the field.
The series, titled "Bigger Than Ben," was produced by Mango Dragon Productions. The first 15-minute episode was released at 9 a.m. Wednesday and covers Roethlisberger's thoughts on attacks that were made against his character in the aftermath of the Antonio Brown trade all the way up to last Sept. 15's game against the Seahawks when the quarterback tore three flexor tendons in his elbow, ending his season.
Roethlisberger and Mike Tomlin detail why they never responded to attacks on the quarterback's character and leadership skills in the aftermath of the trade of Brown to the Raiders and how the criticisms affected both Roethlisberger and his family.
Among the other things Roethlisberger, his wife, Ashley Roethlisberger, Tomlin and others discuss in the first episode are the effects the death of wide receivers coach Darryl Drake had on the Steelers and the potential for his retirement following the injury in Week 2 of last season after a loss to the Seahawks. Others interviewed for episode 1 include Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and team doctor James Bradley.
Wednesday's episode is the first of four that will be released on Roethlisberger, the injury and his recovery.
Roethlisberger and the Steelers are currently training for the 2020 regular season at Heinz Field. The 38-year-old, two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback had surgery to repair the three torn flexor tendons in his elbow and is attempting a comeback.
