MINNEAPOLIS -- ESPN made news early today with a report that injured Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier is engaging in a regular walking program, according to Adam Schefter.
"The next three to six months are critical in his recovery and will provide a significant idea how much more function Shazier can regain. But for now, the fact that he is out of the hospital and moving his legs and walking is a positive sign," Schefter wrote.
But NBC's Michele Tafoya released a statement on Twitter saying she had spoken with someone close to Shazier today and wanted to clarify that the linebacker is not "walking" on his own but using a walker or assistance from other people to work on his walking program.
I have been told by sources close to the situation that anyone making any long-term prognosis regarding Shazier is guessing. Even his doctors don't know what's going to happen with him. It's great that he got out out of the rehabilitation hospital earlier this week. It's great that he's continuing to progress. But he's still got a long way to go in terms of his rehab process.
He's mostly trending in the right direction. But he is in no way out of the woods yet.
The bottom line is that unless you hear something directly from Shazier or his family, take it with a grain of salt. If I'm not commenting on Shazier's progress, it's because I'm trying to be respectful of the wishes of him and his family.
