The Olympics tend to be out of sight, out of mind in off years, but when I came across John Woodruff’s name in a larger piece about Jesse Owens last spring, I knew I had to dig in and do a little research.
Amazingly, video of this race exists, and it is every bit as stunning as described. The guy literally almost stops, yet manages to break outside and boost past the pack, with a gait that is as smooth as it is gangly, and win, handily. Woodruff’s effort is as amazing in hindsight as it was when it occurred, 82 years ago.
