VANCOUVER, British Columbia — The Penguins are about to see P.K. Subban a lot more often.
The Predators traded Subban to the Devils ahead of Day 2 of the NHL Draft in exchange for defensemen Steven Santini, Jeremy Davies, a 2019 second-round pick and a 2020 second-round pick.
Subban, 30, has three yeas remaining on a contract that carries an average annual value of $9 million. The Predators are not retaining any salary in the deal.
After the trade, the Predators are projected to have $13,691,668 in cap space with 11 forwards, eight defensemen, and two goaltenders under contract. The Devils are projected to have $27,020,000 in cap space with eight forwards, four defensemen, and two goaltenders under contract.
Subban scored nine goals and 22 assists and recorded a plus-5 rating in 63 games with the Predators last season, his third year in Nashville.
Santini, 24, was the Devils' second-round pick in 2013. He played just 39 games for the Devils last season, recording one goal, three assists, and a minus-6 rating. He split the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons between the NHL and AHL.
Davies, 22, was the Devils' seventh-round pick in 2016. He spent the past three seasons at Northeastern University and will be making his professional debut next season.
With Subban now off the board — one of the biggest trade chips this offseason — more dominoes around the league should begin to fall during Day 2 of the draft.
